Information: Registration:
You
must register for all classes, as enrollment is limited and on a first come
first serve basis. Return the form
from the back of this brochure to enroll your student. Some classes fill early so do not be disappointed-enroll as
soon as possible as we do not overfill classes.
You are accepting financial responsibility for all classes selected and
any required fees are non-refundable. If
you are unsure of your schedule, please contact the school to be placed on a
waiting list for possible available openings. Student
Information Form:
A new emergency information form must be completed for each student prior
to beginning any summer class. These
are available in the school office now or you may come a few minutes early on
the first day of class to complete necessary paperwork. Tuition:
Tuition is due prior to the start of the first class session each week.
There is a 10% discount available on tuitions for a second or third
sibling concurrently enrolled. (Sorry,
no discount on trips or supply fees.) Tuitions
paid after the start of Monday’s class must include a $5 late fee.
Late
Fees:
The San Jose campus closes promptly at 6 PM and the Extension campus
closes promptly at 5:45 PM. There is a $1 per minute late fee charged for students picked
up after closing time to partially compensate the teachers.
There is a $25 fee for returned checks and a $5 late fee assessed for
tuition paid after the start of class. Tuitions paid more than 7 days late will
incur a $25 per week late fee. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our
tuitions reasonable by being timely with tuition. Extended
Day:
It is required that summer students be signed in and out each day.
For the safety of all, please do not drop students in the parking lot.
During the summer months, we do not have a staff member in the parking
lot as our students arrive at a variety of times.
SORRY, THERE IS NO HOURLY RATE FOR EXTENDED DAY AVAILABLE DURING THE
SUMMER. Students arriving before
8:45 or picked up after 3:15 will be charged the weekly extended day rate. Lunches:
Students bring a lunch from home. It
is recommended that parents use a “Blue Ice” or similar product, as we do
not have space to put lunch boxes in the refrigerator.
However, sandwiches in baggies or Tupperware labeled with the child’s
name can be accommodated. Teachers will also heat lunch items in a microwave for
students. Which
Class?
Students who will be entering first grade in the fall and have completed
kindergarten with sound foundations in reading, writing, math, and social and
emotional skills may join the primary program for 1st-4th
grade students at the Extension campus. Students
who have not mastered these skills should register for the kindergarten program
at the San Jose campus. Students
who will enter the 4th grade in the fall may attend any of the
primary sessions or may elect to attend the summer intermediate workshops for 4th-7th
grade students. Students entering 7th
grade may attend the intermediate classes or a variety of workshops designed for
older students described in the upper division section for 7th-10th
grade. The overlap allows for
individualized placement based on individual student maturity.

Memorial Day) June 2-6, 9-13
MUSIC AND DRAMA SHOWCASE Everyone loves to be a
star! Students will learn
improvisation games and develop skits as they act out familiar stories.
Costumes and make-up create our characters.
We’ll also learn the basics of music as we explore instruments and make
some of our own to include in our rhythm band.
Students will combine songs they have learned and skits they have
rehearsed into a final performance for our parents complete with class made
refreshments! You won’t want to
miss it! June 16-20, 23-27
CHEF’S SCHOOL
Everyone loves to cook! Students
will develop math, reading, and writing skills as they use recipes and cook
delicious and wholesome treats. We’ll
read classic literature such as Blueberries for Sal and make blueberry
muffins. After reading Stone
Soup, we’ll simmer a delicious pot of homemade soup to enjoy with our
classmates. We’ll learn to measure, sift, blend, and frappe! We’ll even make some treats to bring home and share with
our families. June 30-July 4, July 7-11
VAN GOGH, MATISSE, AND ME!
Children
are natural artists and research shows the importance of creative expression in
the early years. In this class,
students will be introduced to works of the masters such as Van Gogh, Picasso,
Matisse, Rembrandt, and Monet. Your
child will even be able to identify works by these painters!
But even better, we will create art in the style of these artists as we
learn techniques of painting, pastel, charcoal, pointillism, impressionism, and
abstraction. Families will be
invited to a gallery showing at the end of the workshop!

Independence Day) July 14-18, 21-25
TROPICAL LUAU!
Aloha! Learn about islands,
make a grass skirt to wear, bake pineapple upside down cake, dance the hula,
hear Hawaiian music, do the limbo, build a sand castle, and create your own fish
reef. Every student receives his or
her own plush hula teddy bear to keep! We’ll
create clothes and suitcases for our bears and take them on a trip to a tropical
paradise! July 28-August 1, August 4-8 NATURE SCIENCE
Science is all around us! Children
naturally love to explore nature as we learn techniques of observation and facts
about plants and animals through hands-on activities. Insect exploration, window
gardening, a recycling project to help develop respect for our planet, creation
of leaf prints, making bird feeders, and solar sunprints will all be included.
Students will use the “scientific method” to count, sort, and analyze
our findings. Teaching children to
be careful observers of the world around them builds academic abilities for
future school success and instills a love of learning. August 11-15, 18-22 MEDIEVAL TIMES
Knights,
shields, damsels, dragons, swords, helmets, crowns, and castles all come to life
in this exciting session devoted to life in medieval times.
Students will make their own castles, play squire games, create medieval
hats for imaginative dress up, play capture the dragon’s gold, and even cook a
peasant’s feast (everyone will eat with their hands!).

CATS AND DOGS
Learn about our best
friends! Teach our school dogs a
new trick! Make your own Garfield
comic. Learn about the different
breeds of cats and dogs. Grow
catnip for our school cat, Zoey. Receive
your own plush dog as part of this class and build a dog house and enter your
‘pet’ in our dog show. This
class is doggone fun! ( no class on

FAIRYTALE THEATER
Everyone loves fairytales! We’ll
read some classic stories and write a fairy tale of our own.
Then we’ll learn acting techniques to stage our own production!
Students will build scenery and create costumes and then rehearse their
lines as we prepare for our big show! Parents
will be invited to see their child in a starring role! June 23-27, 30-July 4 WHO WANTS TO BE A
PIRATE?!
Climb aboard our sailing ship as we head off in search of treasure!
Students will make individual treasure chests and learn to read a map to
search for doubloons. We’ll
create pirate hats and learn about talking parrots!
We’ll read the story of Peter Pan and write our own “I don’t want
to grow up” story about why it is great to be a kid! We’ll make clay mugs to fire in the kiln and enjoy drinking
apple cider from them during a pirate’s feast!

THE NATURE OF COLOR
The world is a rainbow of color! Learn
how science and art mix in this amazing workshop.
How is color seen by our brains and what happens to light to make colors? Learn to mix colors using primary and secondary colors of the
color wheel. Do experiments to see how heat is absorbed or reflected by
different colors. Using objects from nature create original art projects such as
sand candles, leaf etchings, and fruit prints. Color your world! July 21-25, July 28 INCREDIBLE YOU! Who
is incredible? You are!
Discover the super hero in you as we make individual superhero capes,
create our own comic strips, learn how animated movies are made, see a super
hero movie while eating flavored popcorn, visit the dress-up center and act out
our own superhero skit, and create an original character for a story board.

VACATION TO ITALY
Take a vacation to Italy! Make
a map shaped like a boot, create a pasta picture, make noodles from scratch,
bake your own pizza, build a leaning tower of Pisa, star in our opera, grow some
basil. We’ll read the story of Strega Nona and her
overflowing spaghetti pot and then cook up a pasta lunch to enjoy in class.
We’ll even learn to speak some Italian!

week of summer with silly songs, jokes, skits, and silly food!
Wear your clothes inside out, mismatch your socks, and learn the silly

ANCIENT GREECE AND ROME
Visit the fascinating world of the ancient Greeks and Romans!
Learn about the philosophy, mythology, and Alexander the Great. Make Greek pottery vases to fire in the kiln, come to the
toga party, enjoy baking baklava, hear the story of the Trojan horse, compete in
our own Olympics and win a medal, see films about famous mythological beasts,
create a classical style marble sculpture, and build a model of the Parthenon.
Learn to draw Medusa and guard your Achilles as we investigate the gods,
goddesses and mythology of this interesting era.

NORTH TO ALASKA! BRRRR!
It may be hot outside but we have lots of chilly fun in our workshop!
Travel to the far north to learn about our 50th state and the
interesting Native Americans from this region.
Carve a totem pole, build an igloo, go ice sledding on our amphitheater,
make ice cream, carve a “walrus tusk ivory” sculpture, make a power
necklace, enjoy a shave ice snow cone, and compete in sled races.
As part of this study, we will go on an ice skating field trip!

ART FROM MANY HANDS
Develop your artistic
abilities while studying the art and folk art of countries around the world.
Visit India and create your own Taj Mahal.
We’ll cook up some spicy Indian food, too!

Make adinkra block prints from Africa.
We’ll learn to mix colors, draw using perspective, use the rule of
thirds, and master cross-hatching and design concepts.

THE CAT’S MEOW
Learn all about cats from lions, the king of beasts, to house cats like
our school cat, Zoey! Make cat
pillows, create clay cat magnets, and learn to care for pet cats.
Discover cougars, mountain lions, cheetahs, and tigers and learn what
they have in common with smaller cats. Why
are some of these big cats endangered? Learn to play tiger hunt and cat and mouse. This class is

FISH OUT OF WATER
Learn amazing
fish facts in this workshop! Make a
Japanese fish kite, create a fishing game to play with your friends, and carve a
soap fish! We’ll cook up a
“fish fry” for lunch and make homemade tarter sauce.
Students will play games to learn why fish swim in schools and
investigate peculiar animals of the deep. We’ll
create fish prints and learn about ocean ecology.

SCIENCE MYSTERIES
Build a bridge in a suspension competition with your friends to learn how
physics keeps bridges from collapsing. Make
ooblek to learn that a solid is sometimes a liquid!
Use energy from the sun to bake cookies.
Make a painting that floats on water.
See how air can explode a plastic bottle.
You’ll learn principles of science while having hands-on fun

FILMMAKING
Be
a moviemaker in this exciting workshop. Students
will write a script, develop costumes, learn acting techniques, and go on
location to shoot their film using state of the art HD filmmaking equipment.
Back in class, they will edit their dailies using computer software, add
a musical score, and even create credits. The
final DVD will save these memories for families to enjoy for years to come.

Everyone’s favorite
summer workshop! Each day features
two educational and fun-filled activities!
We’re going skating, bowling, fencing, playing billiards, to the
movies, checking out museums, competing in a scavenger hunt at the mall,

BACK TO NATURE (camping trip)
Spend Monday and Tuesday in class learning nature skills.
We’ll carve walking sticks, learn orienteering techniques, and use star
charts to read the night sky. On
Wednesday and Thursday, we head to the cool north of Arizona for our camping
trip. Students will set up camp,
play team and leadership games, sing around the campfire, and enjoy outdoor
cooking.
We conclude our
week of fun at school on Friday by making a photomontage of our week’s
adventure. June 22-27 GOURMET CULINARY ARTS
No more microwave
lunches for you! We’re learning
to cook gourmet meals from scratch. Make
your own pasta, bake French pastries, pickle some pickles, roll an enchilada,
and munch on tasty snacks you cook yourself!

celebrate with a day at Venice Beach! We’ll build sand castles, fly kites, ride the waves, visit
the street vendors, and check out the live entertainment. Tonight, we enjoy Santa Monica Pier for dinner and then a
ride on the roller coaster or carousel before heading back to our hotel. Sunday, May 25
Universal Studios is our destination today!
Learn how movies are made in our behind the scenes tour and then be in
the movies as we ride some amazing rides. Discover
Jurrasic Park, try out the new Simpsons Ride, be scared by The Mummy, experience
the heat of Backdraft and much more! A
full day, we stay until closing! Monday, May 26
After breakfast, we pack up and head for home with enough great memories
to last for years to come! We’ll
arrive at school around 5PM. All transportation, lodging, admissions,
activities, and continental breakfasts are included. Students are responsible for four lunches and three dinners.
This trip always fills quickly. A
$95 non-refundable deposit is required with the remaining $300 due by May 9h. Registration for Super Summer 2008 Please check the sessions your child will
attend. Tuition is due prior to the
start of each class. You are
agreeing to financial responsibility for all classes indicated.
Classes fill so register early. You

attending less than a full week or who are absent pay the full week’s tuition,
as we cannot take another student in your child’s place.
School will be closed May 26h for Memorial Day and July 4th
